The victory gave Blue Devils head coach Mike Krzyzewski his 423rd career ACC victory, surpassing Dean Smith for the most all-time. After the game, Krzyzewski addressed the crowd as part of a ceremony honoring his 1,000th-career win, which came against St. John’s on Jan. 25. As part of the tribute, the Duke players all wore “Coach 1K” shirts, with the number 1 embedded as part of the letter K. Krzyzewski touched on both milestones during his time on the mic, and thanked the Cameron crowd for its support. There might not be any more coach in American more synonymous with his program than Krzyzewski is with Duke basketball. Pretty cool moment.
LSU landed its fifth commitment in the last five days Tuesday afternoon in three-star offensive tackle Shaahdiq Charles, who announced his decision on Twitter. With Charles’ pledge, the Tigers jumped Alabama and Miami on its way to the No. 3 recruiting class in the country – and No. 1 in the SEC – according to 247 Sports.LSU has always recruited well, so this momentum comes as no surprise. But the 2017 recruiting cycle is far from over. A lot can change before next February.
MONTREAL – A new group of mostly Lac-Megantic residents is seeking authorization from Quebec Superior Court to sue for economic and moral damages worth upwards of $5 million relating to the Lac-Megantic rail tragedy in 2013.Train engineer Tom Harding, Canadian Pacific Railway and Montreal, Maine & Atlantic, the defunct railway company at the heart of the disaster, are named in the court document filed in mid-May.The motion to institute proceedings was filed in Lac-Megantic and involves 49 plaintiffs who opted to not join another, massive class-action with 5,000 people and businesses that was authorized in 2015 against the same defendants.Earlier this year, the judge hearing that case joined it with a $409-million Quebec government lawsuit and another lawsuit brought by insurance companies. That one trial is to be heard in September 2019.On July 6, 2013, a runaway train hauling tanker cars loaded with volatile crude oil broke loose and barrelled into the town of 6,000 in the wee hours before derailing and exploding. It set off several massive blasts that wiped out a large swath of the downtown core and killed 47 people.Three former MMA employees charged criminally in connection with disaster were found not guilty by a jury last January: Harding, rail traffic controller Richard Labrie and manager of train operations Jean Demaitre. One month later, the Crown announced it would not appeal the verdicts. The new filing, like the other legal challenges against the railway, alleges that Canadian Pacific was negligent in the leadup to the accident and should have known the product being shipped was volatile. It also states the company had responsibility for the cargo being shipped.A Canadian Pacific spokesman said there would be no comment as the matter is under litigation, but the railway giant has previously denied any responsibility in the disaster because it handed off the trains to MMA for the final leg of the journey. The new motion describes the plaintiffs as people who resided in the Lac-Megantic area, owned or leased property there or were physically in the area at the time of the disaster and suffered losses.A total of $5.1 million is being claimed, with amounts varying from $15,000 to $1 million. The motion says the amounts are being sought for various reasons, including stress, being forced from home and the loss of income, personal property or enjoyment of life.A Quebec City law firm representing the 49 plaintiffs declined to comment further Thursday.Charles Shearson, Harding’s lawyer, said his client’s name remains on the list of defendants despite his limited means.“It’s another legal problem,” Shearson said. “I think his ultimate goal is to get all the legal processes out of the way so he can embark in some kind of healing, some kind of semblance of regaining a normal life for himself, given the circumstances.”Companies in this story: (TSX:CP)
DETROIT — Chris Reynolds was promoted by Toyota late last year to one of the toughest jobs in the U.S. auto industry. He’s in charge of North American manufacturing, as well as human resources, legal, finance and communications. It’s manufacturing that will present the biggest challenge for Reynolds, who must navigate uncertain U.S. trade policies including tariff threats and possible replacement of the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico. Toyota produces vehicles in both countries for sale in the U.S.Also, U.S. auto sales are expected to decline slightly in 2019, and sales of traditional sedans, once staples in Toyota’s U.S. model lineup, are falling.Reynolds, the son of a Ford factory worker who grew up in Detroit, spoke with The Associated Press after his duties were expanded by the company. The interview has been edited for length and clarity.Q: The U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which replaces the North American Free Trade Agreement, is still up in the air. Twenty-five per cent tariffs on imported vehicles and parts also are on the table. How does the new agreement affect Toyota, and would you be able to bring production from Japan to Alabama or some other U.S. plant if tariffs go into effect?A: We think that the recently negotiated USMCA, if it’s approved, and we’re optimistic that it will be, will actually allow us to flex our production in order to build as much as we can here. We’re looking to do that regardless of the tariff situation. We can’t make moves simply because of the tariff situation. So while tariffs are problematic, they’re essentially a tax on the consumer. Obviously we are not in favour of them. The real litmus test for us in terms of local investment is can we be competitive in building what we sell here? That’s the lens through which we would view whether we would open up a new plant or not, or what kinds of additional investments we might make in our existing plant infrastructure.Q: President Trump has threatened to pull out of NAFTA if Congress doesn’t approve its replacement. What would that do to Toyota?A: When you assemble a vehicle in one state, but the parts can literally crisscross the border five or six times before it actually gets assembled to the vehicle, it’s very challenging to think of an outcome where the border actually becomes a barrier to our whole assembly process, our whole supply chain. That’s not just true of Toyota, it’s true of every automaker. So there’s common industry interest in making sure that there are as few barriers as possible. That’s why I’m optimistic that the Trump administration’s moves on USMCA will bear some fruit. We’re OK with where the USMCA landed.Q: What percentage of vehicles that Toyota sells in the U.S. are built in North America and in the U.S.?A: Roughly 74 per cent. Fifty per cent is U.S. only, and that’s growing. We were on that track before this sort of spasm on trade and tariffs.Q: If the U.S. imposes 25 per cent tariffs on imported vehicles and parts, Toyota has said there would be significant price increases for vehicles built in the U.S. The price of the Camry midsize car, which has among the highest U.S. parts content, would rise by $1,800. Why would the Camry price go up?A: There’s no 100 per cent U.S.-made product. Every vehicle from every manufacturer has some amount of componentry that comes from somewhere else. We’ve got to be able to absorb those costs. And where we can’t absorb them, what tariffs do to you is they compel us and every other manufacturer to pass those costs on. Let’s not forget the steel and aluminum tariffs. They also have an impact, and not a positive one. So that’s why you’re seeing the risk on price even for a vehicle like a Camry.Q: Auto sales in the U.S. are expected to slow, especially of cars. Yet Toyota and Mazda are jointly building a new factory in Alabama that would build cars. Why do you need more factory capacity in a declining market?A: Our view of the market goes beyond the normal cycle. We’ve got to be able to plan beyond that and anticipate where the market will be not just next year but over the next decade or so. We think there’s a future in passenger cars. We think there will always be a need for that. We’re actually excited about the fact that some of our competitors might be exiting that segment. We view it as an opportunity in the medium term to long term.Tom Krisher, The Associated Press

VICTORIA, B.C. – The B.C. Government has introduced legislation to complete the fiscal framework for LNG investment.According to the Government, this legislation will pull together the final pieces needed to deliver LNG investment that brings long-term benefits to the Province and thousands of good-paying jobs for B.C. workers, while operating within strong environmental protections.Carole James, Minister of Finance, says this legislation completes the process of creating a fiscal framework that invites investment while protecting Indigenous rights and the environment. “British Columbians are counting on us to attract LNG investment that meets strict conditions: delivering jobs and financial benefits to B.C., creating economic partnerships with Indigenous peoples, and protecting our clean air, land and water. This legislation completes the process of creating a fiscal framework that invites investment while supporting those conditions.”Once passed, this legislation is expected to amend the Income Tax Act to implement a natural gas tax credit for LNG development in British Columbia, repeal the Liquefied Natural Gas Income Tax Act that created barriers for investment in B.C.’s natural gas sector, and repeal the Liquefied Natural Gas Project Agreements Act that left British Columbians vulnerable to footing the bill for special industry tax and regulatory protections. The Government says, once complete, these steps will deliver the fiscal setting needed for LNG Canada’s proposed $40-billion project in northern British Columbia – the largest private-sector investment in B.C.’s history. It is expected to create 10,000 construction jobs and up to 950 permanent jobs in the Kitimat processing terminal. It is also said that this project is on track to be the cleanest of its kind in the world, meaning it will fit within the greenhouse gas reduction targets of the Government’s CleanBC climate action plan.To learn more about the new framework for LNG, you can visit the Government’s website.
My wife is having an affair and she has left me. Can you help me identify the reason behind her actions? I’m shattered and depressed.Name withheld We marry because we are in love, and we fall in love with those who meet our most important requirement – emotional need. When the one we marry stops meeting those emotional needs, we become vulnerable to others who are willing and also able to fulfil them. If we let someone else meet our needs, we fall in love with that person, and an affair is off and running. Once an affair begins, it is like an addiction. The same emotional attachment that drew you and your spouse into marriage is now directed to someone else. So, time shall decide the future. Don’t worry, all will happen for the best. Plan a vacation, preferably just the two of you. This will heal the situation and help bridge the gap. Try to ignite the physical element as that really impacts the marriage. It is indeed a fact that in the present time, there seems to be a difference between the face and the mask people wear. People do have hidden agendas which may conflict your expectations. The best way to be a happier individual is to have less emotional involvement. Give every association the time it requires before you give in or open up completely. But even for Houstonians whose family has lived here for generations, it never hurts to have a few new storm tricks up your sleeve. In the midst of hurricane season, here’s what you need to know about handling a hurricane or tropical storm, starting with the basics. What counts as a hurricane? The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) uses the term tropical cyclone to describe a rotating system of clouds and thunderstorms that forms over a large body of water. There are several types of tropical cyclones, ranging from a tropical depression to a hurricane being the most severe.Tropical depressions have winds less than 39 mph. If the maximum sustained winds grow faster than 39 mph, the cyclone becomes a tropical storm. And a hurricane forms when the maximum sustained winds reach 74 mph. Hurricanes are then rated on a 1 to 5 scale, based on wind speed, with a 5 indicating “catastrophic damage will occur.”Hurricane season in the Atlantic runs from June 1 to November 30, as the majority of storms occur during that time period. What is the difference between a hurricane warning and a hurricane watch? When listening to or reading storm coverage, you might hear the terms “hurricane warning” and “hurricane watch.” These terms, although similar, have certain distinctions. According to NOAA, when a hurricane watch is issued, it means hurricane conditions are possible. This is not as severe as a hurricane warning, which means that meteorologists expect hurricane conditions to occur. David J. Dark inflation opens up a gravitational window on the first moments after the Big Bang A model that could see testing at the LHC is one developed by Anupam Mazumdar, a scientist at the Lancaster University in the United Kingdom and his colleagues Rouzbeh Allahverdi, at the University of New Mexico in the United States, and Bhaskar Dutta, at Texas A&M University. Their model shows how inflation generates the “seed for structure,” and describes how cold dark matter accounts for “missing” matter in the universe. Thirdly, the model’s inflation explains neutrino masses. The results of the paper can be found in “Unifying Inflation and Dark Matter with Neutrino Masses” in Physical Review Letters.“We know dark matter has to exist,” Mazumdar tells PhysOrg.com. “We see its influences. But it has to interact really weakly with the rest of the universe. This is why the right-handed supersymmetric neutrinos – sneutrinos – are a dark matter candidate. The right handed sneutrinos also give rise to tiny neutrino masses observed in nature.”Mazumdar also explains that the universe is expanding: “It undergoes inflation.” So Mazumdar and his peers wondered if it was possible to tie inflation to dark matter and neutrino masses. “We wanted to see if we could tie these things together in a model that can be tested in a laboratory.”Part of the challenge involved in putting together their model included the fact that in most standard models that address this question, the inflaton field values are entered by hand. Inflatons are characterized by integer spin. “We had to figure out how to talk about an inflaton as a scalar particle and try to identify what an inflaton is, exactly,” Mazumdar says.He goes on to explain that no single particle acts like an inflaton. Instead, a combination of particles is needed. “When we combined an sneutrino, a standard Higgs particle and a supersymmetric lepton, we found they act like an inflaton whose masses and couplings are not ad-hoc but well motivated and constrained by the current experimental limits.” “The model shows that the inflaton which is responsible for inflating is also responsible for neutrino masses….This component could also act like dark matter,” Mazumdar continues. “Now it is something that can be verified in experiments. Once the properties of the supersymmetric neutrino are found, the testable properties can help us identify dark matter.”“We are always looking for evidence to back up observation,” Mazumdar points out. “Until now, finding ‘missing’ matter has relied on cosmic microwave background experiments. It was thought that inflation could only be tested by this method. Now we have proposed a simple model that would allow inflation testing on earth.”Mazumdar hopes that the model he and his peers have developed can be tested at the LHC by the end of this year or the beginning of next year. “This could answer the questions of why neutrinos have such small mass, and whether they would make a good dark matter candidate and the inflaton candidate.”Copyright 2007 PhysOrg.com. One of the biggest mysteries of the universe deals with questions of dark matter. There are several experiments and models being designed all over the world to try and determine what would make good dark matter candidates. And with the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Switzerland, some of these experiments may be ready for testing. This document is subject to copyright.
