As Guyana advances towards becoming an oil-producing nation, lecturers and instructors from the Linden community in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) were beneficiaries of a two- day oil and gas sector training, conducted by the Centre for Local Business Development and the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training.The interactive training sessions, which were hosted at the Linden Technical Institute (LTI) on Thursday and Friday last, targeted mainly lecturers of the institution, with the aim of promoting an understanding of the process and importance of offshore oil and gas production.Participants received an introduction to offshore oil and gas, health, safety and environmental-related topics under the three courses which were launched.Speaking at one of the sessions, Senior Business Specialist attached to the Centre for Local Business Development, Dr Natasha Gaskin-Peters noted that the Centre aimed to build local companies through funding by ExxonMobil.She said the Centre would have met with the Institution last year, and the technical and vocational schools were assessed to ascertain what was available here in Guyana.“Linden was one of the schools that we have met with and we will continue to work with the technical and vocational schools, as we move along because we know that you guys want to be engaged and want to ensure that your students have the requisite skills for the industry and so this is just the starting process,” Gaskin-Peters said.Additionally, she pointed out that while the workshop was being piloted in Linden, other communities will soon benefit from the initiative.Apart from raising awareness on the process and importance of offshore oil and gas production in Guyana, the workshop also sought to enable participants to understand the implementation of strategies to upgrade health and safety.Participants were engaged by Health and Safety Specialist attached to the Centre for Local Business Development, Allan Lambert. Other topics discussed included value chains, technologies, local content and opportunities in the new oil and gas industry in Guyana.
Management at Kelly’s Centra have expressed their delight at being shortlisted for the prestigious ‘Zero Project’ award which recognises businesses for providing people with disabilities with employment. The hugely popular businesses was nominated for the project back in June, but have now been formally shortlisted.Manager of Kelly’s Centra, Mairtin Kelly expressed his delight, and stated that the company would continue to dedicate themselves to create job opportunities for those with disabilities. Kelly told Donegal Daily, “We’re delighted our store complex was nominated for this prestigious World wide award by James McClean, a community Activist from Letterkenny specializing in promoting the inclusion of people with disabilities in everyday life.“In line with the guidelines outlined in the UNCRPD (The United Nations Convention on Rights for People with Disabilities) of which he worked on the formulation of in New York.“Kelly’s was nominated as they have consistently shown an openness and encouragement to people with disabilities to become part of Kelly’s diverse workforce, they also try to make people with disabilities and their families welcome as customers in their complex as well.”About the Zero Project: The Zero Project has completed the nomination process for Innovative Practices and Policies in the field of employment, work and vocational education and training. It has received 213 nominations for Innovative Practices and 47 for Innovative Policies from more than 70 countries in the worldVienna/Geneva 12th July 2016: The Zero Project researches the status of the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD) around the world and, this year, is focusing on employment, work and vocational education and training.The nomination process started in May 2016 and the Call for Nominations of Innovative Practices, as well as Innovative Policies, closed at the end of June. The process of carefully screening, shortlisting, voting on, and finally selecting the Innovative Practices and Policies 2017 of the Zero Project has now already begun.The Zero Project received an astounding 260 Nominations from 77 countries. What this demonstrates is a global movement of practitioners advancing opportunities in employment, work and vocational education and training “on the ground,” supporting persons with all kinds of disabilities in all contexts.The overall aim is to award a total of around 50 Innovative Practices and 10 Innovative Policies at the next Zero Project Conference in February 2017 at the UN Vienna.
