Caring4Girls is a programme under the Imbumba Foundation. Richard Mabaso is the founder of Imbumba. (Image: Nelson Mandela Foundation)There was great excitement when the 27 climbers of the Trek4Mandela campaign got together yesterday to start their journey to climb Africa’s highest mountain.Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula and Miss South Africa Liesl Laurie were among those at the send-off event in Johannesburg earlier today.Mbalula said that he planned to join the climbers in summiting Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro, at 5 895m above sea level, in 2016. He also pledged R100 000 to the campaign this year.Trek4Mandela, an initiative for Nelson Mandela International Day, is in its fourth year. It benefits Caring4Girls, a programme to provide sanitary towels and menstrual hygiene information to underprivileged girls in rural communities. Since it was established in 2012, Trek4Mandela has attracted massive interest from the government, the private sector and NGOs locally and internationally. It has generated support for over 50 000 beneficiaries, mainly in Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. Many of the climbers – as well as those sending them off – made known their enthusiasm on social media:Take action. England beat India by 196 runs in this 2000th Test match at Lord’s on Monday, which was also the 100th Test between India and England. Score | PhotosIndia started the day with an overnight score of 80/1 with VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid at the crease as a target of 458 runs loomed large. Eventually, the target proved too massive for injury-hit India. In the morning session the visitors lost their opener Rahul Dravid when a James Anderson ball took a thick edge off his bat to land in the keeper Mat Prior’s gloves. He fell for 36 and India were down to 96/2.Post Dravid’s wicket Laxman and Gautam Gambhir became overtly cautious, playing on the deliveries that were coming straight to the bat and leaving the rest. They didn’t have a choice and they needed to stay in the middle for long to save the Test.Gradually, the two started chipping away from the massive 458-run target. But the partnership eventually came to an end when Anderson came around to get rid of Laxman on 56. Laxman went for a pull and ended up getting caught by Bell.In the next over England spinner Graeme Swann struck Gambhir on the pads and he was adjudged LBW on 22. India were 135/4 at the stage and were looking down the barrel.Once again Sachin Tendulkar stepped in and once again his fans cutting across nationalities started praying for his elusive 100th international century.Tendulkar’s partner in the middle was left-hander, Suresh Raina. At lunch India were 142/4, with Tendulkar and Raina at the crease and the visitors needed a massive 316 runs.advertisementA few minutes had gone by into the second session when England bowlers got the man they wanted. Sachin’s fans were again left disappointed when a James Anderson delivery trapped the batting maestro plumb in the front of the wicket when he was on 12.This was after he got two lives. First a Stuart Broad ball trapped him leg-before when he was on 11, but he was saved as the DRS is not being used for leg-before decisions in this series. And then, a ball before Anderson got him, he was dropped in the slips by Andrew Strauss. So Tendulkar’s highest at Lord’s continues to be 37.Post Tendulkar’s fall, Raina and skipper MS Dhoni batted with resolve to avoid defeat. The two Chennai Super Kings team-mates could be seen sharing a good partnership in the middle. At tea, the two were going steady at the crease and India score was 218/5.But the third session had a different tale to tell. Minutes into it, skipper MS Dhoni was seen walking back with Chris Tremlett claiming his first wicket of the innings when the India total was 225/6.Post that wicket it was a matter of time before England players were out there celebrating their win. The biggest hurdle in front of them was Suresh Raina and James Anderson scalped him to increase his victims tally to five and provided England with a fine win 196-run win.Raina scored a dogged 78, but could not save India from the jaws of defeat. Kevin Pietersen won the Man of the Match for his unbeaten double hundred.

HALIFAX – Another great white shark has been detected off Nova Scotia.A tag attached to Savannah, a 210-kilogram shark, pinged Monday morning off Barren Island near Sherbooke on the province’s eastern shore. It joins a 600-kilogram tagged shark named Hilton, who has spent more than a week along Nova Scotia’s south shore, and most recently pinged Monday night off Peggys Cove outside Halifax. Both sharks were tagged by the research group Ocearch, and are being watched closely through an Ocearch tracking map and their own Twitter feeds with thousands of followers.Ocearch chairman Chris Fischer has said white sharks could be using Nova Scotia’s Sable Island as a place to mate. The sharks are also likely drawn to the province to feed on seals. On Tuesday, Hilton’s Twitter feed responded to a tweet showing seals off Grandmother’s Cove near Lunenburg, N.S., with a drool emoji and the words: “Mmmm yummy seals.”Rear Admiral John Newton, who commands Canada’s East Coast navy, also tweeted a photo Monday of a south shore inlet, saying “@HiltonTheShark has been scaring the seals right up into our cove today. First time seeing them hanging in the shallows.”On Monday, Hilton had tweeted a map showing his Nova Scotia location and called to another Twitter-using shark: “Hey @SharkSavannah, come on up. Lots of good eating here!”In November, a 900-kilogram great white named Lydia — who also has her own Ocearch-managed Twitter account — was among two tracking off Nova Scotia. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy says the animal is the largest predatory fish in the world, with a powerful jaw full of serrated teeth and a body that can weigh up to 1,800 kilograms. But it says the population in the North Atlantic has dropped by 75 per cent in the past 15 years and is listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as vulnerable. They have been protected from harvesting in U.S. waters since 1991, but the conservancy says still so little is known about where the sharks travel, pup and feed.

WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington Board of Health held a brief 30-minute meeting on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at Town Hall.EEE & West Nile VirusWilmington Health Director Shelly Newhouse reported that there’s been no positive tests for EEE or West Nile Virus in Wilmington mosquitos this summer.“We do typically get a positive West Nile Virus positive. We have in years past. Testing is still ongoing. We could still wind up with one, but Wilmington is currently considered low risk. There’s been no positive tests in town and we hope it stays that way,” Newhouse told board members. “The town’s Animal Control Officer has visited all the horse owners in town. All horses are inoculated. Owners have been given fact sheets and are aware of the seriousness.”Newhouse noted that the Central Massachusetts Mosquito Control Project is continuing to conduct regular sprayings in Wilmington, but will stop once the night temperature drops to 55 degrees.Highland Estates Subdivision Plan ApprovedThe Board approved a modified subdivision plan for Highland Estates. Highland Estates is a conservation subdivision on Hopkins Street, near Sarafina Way, with 17 houses proposed next to 7 acres of open space along Lubbers Brook. The developer made changes to lot lines as a result of relocating a septic tank, which necessitated the Board of Health to reapprove the plan before the Planning Board is able to proceed.Update On New RestaurantsHealth Director Shelly Newhouse updated the board on new restaurants opening in town. Newhouse recently conducted a first wave of pre-opening inspections of Michael’s Place Bar & Grille on Lowell Street and Tremezzo Pizzeria on Shawsheen Street (formerly Uncle Mickey’s).“I think Michael’s Place Bar & Grille will be opening soon,” said Newhouse, noting she was just in last week to conduct an inspection of the equipment and new bar. “And Tremezzo Pizzeria is moving right in shortly.” Newhouse says she will need to conduct additional inspections at each restaurant prior to their openings. In response to a question from Board of Health Chair Elizabeth Sabounjian, Newhouse revealed she was as much in the dark as residents are regarding the status of Casa Blanca, which is slated to move into the old Chili’s location at the Wilmington Crossing. Casa Blanca was originally eyeing a September 2018 opening, but the Mexican chain was affected by the Merrimack Valley gas explosions, closing its Andover location for two months.“I haven’t heard anything from [Casa Blanca] in awhile. It seems like they’ve stopped doing any work in their building,” responded Newhouse.Newhouse also noted that the Wilmington Farmers Market’s fall season runs until Sunday, October 13, 2019 on the Swain Green. And organizers will likely again hold a monthly indoor Winter Market similar to last year. The Board of Health also reviewed several food inspection reports and approved their August Meeting minutes. The Board next meets on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at 5:30pm in Town Hall’s Room 9.Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook. Follow Wilmington Apple on Twitter. Follow Wilmington Apple on Instagram.
