first_imgATHENS – Panathinaikos’ hoopsters showed a rejuvenated spirit, beating Unicaja Malaga 69-60 on April 3 to assure itself of a making the playoffs of the Euroleague basketball tourney, which was won last year and in 2012 by its arch-rival in Greece, Olympiakos.The Greek team dominated from start-to-finish despite the relatively close score, showing it was not going to be denied a chance for a crack at taking back a title it won in 1996, 2000, 2002, 2007, 2009 and 2011.The winners where cheered on by some 15,000 fans at the Olympia Sports Hall who roared from beginning to end. Panathinaikos led 33-28 at halftime but ran away to a 17-point lead, 60-43 behind a vise-like defense that strangled the Spanish team.Captain Dimitris Diamantidis had 13 points and Stephane Lasme another 10, as Panathinaikos had 11 players who scored.If in the last round of games Panathinaikos beats Olympiakos in Piraeus next week it will finish third, and if it loses it will probably end up fourth.
