first_imgFRISCO, Texas – With a pair of performances that helped clinch at least a portion of the Southland Conference regular-season title, UIW’s Ra’Quanne Dickens and Malick Phillips were named as the league’s Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week. Northwestern State’s Hayden Bourgeois was tabbed as the Special Teams Player of the Week. The announcements were made by conference officials Monday morning. All weekly awards are presented by MidSouth Bank.Dickens charged the UIW offense with three touchdowns on 35 touches as the Cardinals topped Central Arkansas 40-27 Saturday. Phillips sparked an Incarnate Word defense that held firm in a comeback road victory. Bourgeois was put to use regularly returning three punts for 52 yards as the Demons downed No. 18 McNeese in a double overtime thriller Saturday night.Offensive Player of the Week: Ra’Quanne Dickens, Incarnate Word – Sr. – Running Back – Seminole, Fla.Dickens broke the program record for single-season rushing yards and single-season rushing touchdowns against UCA. He finished the game with 213 rushing yards against a Bears defense that entered the contest allowing opposing teams an average of just 110.6 rushing yards per game. This was his second 200-yard rushing effort this season. Dickens now has 1,054 rushing yards in 2018, becoming the first 1,000-yard rusher in program history. His three touchdowns, a career high, bringing his season total to 14 rushing. This is the first conference championship for the Cardinals, who became postseason eligible at the Division I level in 2017.Honorable Mention: Jazz Ferguson, Northwestern State; Chase Fourcade, NichollsDefensive Player of the Week: Malick Phillips, Incarnate Word – So. – Corner Back – Orange, TexasMalick Phillips was all over the field for the Cardinals on Saturday, guiding UIW’s victory over Central Arkansas and helping the Cardinals earn at least a share of the Southland Conference title. The sophomore had two of UIW’s four interceptions, which set a single-game record for picks, and gave UIW 18 interceptions on the season, marking a new single-season program record. Phillips’ picks marked the first multi-interception game of his career. The sophomore also had a solo tackle and contributed three key pass breakups to help secure UIW’s victory and his second weekly defensive honor this season.Honorable Mention: Jack Gibbens, Abilene Christian; Dedrick Garner, Lamar; Obi Iheoma, Northwestern StateSpecial Teams Player of the Week: Hayden Bourgeois, Northwestern State – So. – Punt Returner – Crowley, La.Bourgeois blocked a field goal attempt to keep Northwestern alive during the scoreless first overtime in a 37-34 upset over 18th-ranked McNeese. The sophomore also had two key punt returns that led to 10 points for the Demons. His 17-yard punt runback early after halftime gave NSU the ball at the 35 and ignited the Demons’ first scoring series. In his biggest moment, he saved the Demons at the end of the first overtime period by slicing through the left side and blocking the potential game-winning field goal from the Cowboys kicker. He also registered seven tackles as a safety, ranking second on the team for the contest.Honorable Mention: Lorran Fonseca, Nicholls; Jae’Lon Oglesby, Stephen F.
